IT was jubilations all the way at a family day in the Marshall's Arm Nature Reserve on Saturday.
The event was held to coincide with the Mersey Forest's Forest Fever Fortnight but took on a celebratory theme after the reserve was awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award for the second year running.
The scheme hails the best green spaces in England and Wales and is seen as the national benchmark of excellence for quality parks and open spaces. To receive the award the site had to meet high standards in management for wildlife and as a place for walking and quiet recreation.
The reserve is run by Vale Royal Borough Council in partnership with The Marshall's Arm Local Management Group, a group of local enthusiasts who enjoy the natural delights the area has to offer.
Mark Stocks, lead councillor for environmental policy on the council, paid tribute to the group when he said: 'We are absolutely delighted - receiving a second Green Flag Award is a fantastic achievement. The work at Marshall's Arm is a great example of how local people can make a positive difference to their environment.'
Stuart Poucher, chairman of the Marshall's Arm Local Management Group, said: 'This second Green Flag Award recognises the hard work and financial investment within the site over the past 12 months and we are delighted to have our efforts rewarded.'
MP Mike Hall congratulated all those involved and described the reserve as a great asset for the community. He said: 'The continued enthusiasms and commitment of those involved, has ensured this exceptional area remains one of the most attractive and well managed open spaces in the borough.'
Around 50 people took part in Saturday's water-themed day when the flag was proudly displayed for all to see.
Activities ranged from pond dipping to the creation of giant dragon flies by eager young supporters.
