We did it!

by Holly Breslin, Runcorn Weekly News

RUNCORN’S Brindley Arts Centre has won the title Best Arts Project in the UK at the National Lottery Awards.

Saturday’s star-studded BBC1 show, presented by Dale Winton and Jenni Falconer, featured a film about the venue, which beat competition from rivals including the Tate Modern.

People across Halton voted in their droves – with encouragement from the Weekly News – to see the centre scoop the top title, along with a £2,000 prize and a trophy presented by singer Elaine Paige.

David Parr, Halton Borough Council’s chief executive, said: ‘This national award is recognition that Halton continues to deliver quality and value for money for its local community.’

Accepting the award alongside Cllr Dave Cargill, Sue Davies, the Brindley’s cultural services manager, thanked everyone who voted.

She said: ‘Being on the BBC show and winning the £2,000 will have an amazing impact on everyone at the project.

‘This is a great way to thank all those who have been involved and helped us to make the most of our Lottery funding.’

Elaine Paige said: ‘The Brindley received an overwhelming response from the public who really got behind them. After spending a day with them I can really see why they pulled in all those votes.

‘The Brindley is a fantastic example of how Lottery funding has made a real difference

‘What is so wonderful to see is how The Brindley reaches out to the youth in the local area involving them in many different aspects of the arts.

‘It gives them a sense of purpose and through the interaction an opportunity to learn new skills and develop their self-confidence.’

The Brindley was launched with the help of £2.5m of Lottery funding and a £5m cash injection from the council.
