Athletics: West is best in Cheshire as youngsters take titles

YOUNGSTERS from West Cheshire AC concluded their track and field campaign with a series of county title victories.

Juniors from the Chester and Ellesmere Port-based club demonstrated their versatility at the Cheshire County Combined Events Championships, held at Macclesfield.

Tom Booth, Michael Lyness, Joseph O’Riordan, Jenni Potter, and the under-11 trio of Amy Williams, Elliot Rollins and Alex Kirk all returned home with top marks.

Tom Booth secured top spot in the under-15 boys pentathlon with 2,231 points while Michael Lyness catapulted himself to first position in the under-17 men’s pentathlon in both county and open competitions.

Joseph O’Riordan won the under-13 boys multi-events title with 220 points, ahead of club-mates Michael Willis and Adam Howell, who scored 213 points each.

Jenni Potter clinched top spot in the under 13 girls event – just four points clear of second-placed club-mate, Alice Jennings.

Three of West Cheshire’s under-11s squad also returned home with a Cheshire county team award, Elliot Rollins, Amy Williams and James McMahon.

* DAVE ALEXANDER spearheaded West Cheshire AC’s charge at the opening round of the Wirral Multi-Terrain League, held at Royden Park and Thurstaston Common.

Dave posted 27.30 for third spot over the 4.5 miles course, ahead of Alec Beaney (ninth in 28.24); Andrew Clague (12th in 28.28); Graham Earlam (14th in 29.07); and Graham Jenkins (17th in 29.34). The team finished second with 55 points.

West Cheshire’s B team were fourth on 136 points. Members of the B team included Gary Withers (22nd in 29.56); Alex Haswell (25th in 30.02); Russell Kirk (28th in 30.07); Louis Humphreys (30th in 30.11); and Paul Frodsham (31st in 30.12).

Danny Meadows headed the West Cheshire juniors in the 2.3 miles under-15s race with fourth position in 15.04.

* FIXTURES this weekend include the North West Road Relay Championships, incorporating the Cheshire Championships, at Sefton Park, Liverpool, on Saturday, (11am start).

The Uttoxeter Cross Country Races take place at Bramshall Park on Sunday.

Postal entries close this Saturday, September 15, for the Sutton Six 10k Road Race, being organised by West Cheshire AC, at Guilden Sutton, near Chester, on Sunday, September 23, (11am start).
