Sisters are doing it for themselves

Dec 7 2006

By Alec Doyle, Ellesmere Port Pioneer

THREE sisters have taken their basketball skills from Ellesmere Port to the American college leagues - and they are making quite a name for themselves.

Jennifer and Johannah Leedham sit at the top of the stats for points scored in division two of the North-East 10 conference, while 17-year-old Kirsty has been there for a year building her own reputation.

Now in her sophomore year - her second year of college, 5ft 7ins Jennifer, 20, is second top scorer with 70 points and 15 rebounds in the opening five games.

But younger sister Johannah, a 5ft 11ins 18-year-old freshman, has bagged a phenomenal 150 points and 50 rebounds in the same games.

The pair were brought up on basketball - their father Kim runs Ellesmere Port Panthers - and both went to the Cheshire Academy international boarding school in the US to try to earn scholarships.

Both sisters were successful, although Jennifer left the academy after a year while Johannah waited two, and initially aimed for colleges in NE-10 Division One.

They were all too far from their base, however, so the girls looked to Division Two and found the Franklin Pierce College Ravens team.

Now the sisters are leading the New Hampshire college's promotion push.

College basketball is big news in America and the girls are the focus of much media attention.
