Boreham frustrated as referee steals limelight

Feb 22 2006

Crewe Chronicle

BOXING: CREWE ABC coaches Joey Singleton and Lee Murray were furious as light middleweight Billy Boreham was disqualified 30 seconds from the end of a fight at Longton.

Boreham topped the bill against local boy Scott Carson, at Biddies Social Club.

Both fighters went for broke in an exciting first round. Both took heavy shots, and the second round started at a similar pace.

Midway through the round Boreham was warned by the official for holding as the boxers went toe to toe.

Most onlookers were unable to see an infringement, and the Crewe man was visibly rattled by the decision.

The third round was boxed at a frantic pace, leaving both men exhausted but still punching.

With less than a minute left the referee intervened and disqualified Boreham for holding.

Singleton and Murray were so outraged they made a compliant to the referee, and a club spokesman added: 'The referee was jeered by the crowd who also thought it was a bad decision.

'The fear is that decisions like this will drive promising young boxers away from the sport.'
