Chester Chronicle

 

ROWING: Royal Chester swiftly avenged their defeat by Agecroft in the North of England Head when they beat their longstanding rivals by less than a second at the 74th Head of the River Race from Mortlake to Putney.

The Chester club's victory saw them lift the Jackson Trophy for the fastest provincial crew.

It was the third win of the season for the Royal's first eight.

Royal Chester started four places behind Agecroft in London and covered the 4.5-mile course in eight mins 38.10secs to win the trophy by 0.78 seconds!

As on the River Dee the previous week, they were rowing in the class below Agecroft and captured the Jackson Trophy for the third time in eight years to become only the second triple winners of the trophy, which was introduced in

1961. nOn Sunday, two former pupils of The King's School will line up for Cambridge in the 152nd Boat Race on the River Thames.

Tom James (at seven) and cox Peter Rudge are both internationals with experience of the Boat Race.

Last year's victory for Oxford - their third in four years - narrowed down Cambridge's overall series lead to 78-72.
