A Knight to remember

Nov 29 2006

By John Buckley, Northwich Chronicle

THE biggest game in North-wich this season is due tomorrow night when Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United officially open the Victoria Stadium.

A crowd of about 3,000 is expected and, by coincidence, will be followed the town's second biggest attendance on Sunday when the other Reds - FC United of Manchester - play Congleton Town in the North West Counties League at Witton Albion's ground. About 2,000 are anticipated.

Sir Alex has kept a long-made promise in personally opening the ground, which has grown over the past 18 months to be among the best in non-league football. He will un-veil a plaque in the main stand at 7.30pm.

He will be accompanied by Sir Bobby Charlton and Jack Crompton, the former goalkeeper and first team coach.

Fireworks and cheerleaders will give the evening a carnival atmosphere.

Ferguson and the United first team are otherwise occupied tonight - in the Premiership against Everton - but there is a chance first team players short of match action Kieran Richardson and Alan Smith may be given a run out among what will mainly be a reserve side.

The main stand is a 1,000 ticket sell-out and admission to the terracing is £12 adults, £10 concessions and £6 under 16s.

Vics themselves have a free weekend, returning to action at home to Weymouth on Saturday week.

It gives them time to regroup after successive defeats which kept them in the bottom half of the table.

Manager Steve Burr hopes to reach the top 12 and has not ruled out bidding for a play-off place.

He is exerting pressure on his squad, making changes after the Forest Green defeat and promising more following the home reversal to Gravesend on Saturday.

His programme notes contained a veiled threat. He wrote: 'From now until the transfer window opens in January there is an opportunity for all the players in the squad to show they have the ability to take this football club to a higher level, that is the top half.

'However, if in January we find ourselves in a similar position then that would suggest we need to strengthen the squad which, in turn, would mean one or two departures.'

Burr was this week on England duty with the National Game Xl who play Holland at Burton Albion tonight.

Vics have drawn Conference North outfit Farsley Celtic at home in the FA Trophy 1st round on December 16.

* A meeting to launch a supporters' club at Vics takes place at the stadium on Monday (7.30pm).
