Northwich Vics 1, Histon 3

Sep 17 2007

by Mike Talbot-Butler, Liverpool Daily Post

THE future of manager Neil Redfearn looks in doubt after another disastrous performance from his bottom-of-the-table Blue Square Premier team at the Victoria Stadium, where they suffered their seventh straight defeat.

The Northwich manager brought in three new players on loan and two of them made nightmare debuts.

Worst of the three was 38-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday centre-half Paul Warhurst, who was way off the pace throughout, scoring an own goal in the 10th minute and later being booked, while Wrexham midfielder Gareth Evans was sent off for a dreadful foul on John Kennedy on the half-hour.

Northwich fell behind as early as the third minute when goalkeeper Ben Connett balked Antonio Murray in the penalty area and referee Mike Naylor awarded a penalty from which Cliff Akurang converted.

Vics’ 10 men rallied after the break and reduced their arrears in 50 minutes when the spirited Mike Coulson’s 15-yard shot was deflected by defender Erkan Okay.

The third loan player on debut, Barnsley’s Simon Heslop, brought some much-needed organisation to the Northwich midfield, but dreadful gaps in defence let in John Kennedy for an easy third goal in 82 minutes and the newly-promoted Cambridge club could have doubled their tally so feeble was the home defence.

The sparse crowd of 641 expressed their displeasure in no uncertain terms at the final whistle and there could well be a change of management as early as tomorrow when Vics visit Halifax Town.

NORTHWICH: Connett; Evans, Warhurst, Strong, Brown; Coulson (Birch 80), Battersby, Heslop, Carr (Byrne 76); Maamria, Tait (Wilson 45).
