Fleetwood’s late strike sees West Kirby share Trophy

Sep 11 2007

Carlsberg West Cheshire League

by Arthur Green, Liverpool Daily Post

IN a thrilling Bill Weight Memorial Final last season’s Carlsberg First Division West Cheshire champions West Kirby were held by this season’s leading side Runcorn Town.

Runcorn led through a Shaun Tierney penalty only for Liam Atherton to hit back with a superb brace. An Adam Cardin volley drew the team’s level before a Kyle Marsid free kick gave Runcorn the lead.

But Kieren Fleetwood hit the equaliser from the spot to share the trophy.

Vauxhall Motors Reserves recorded their first points when they outplayed local rivals Ellesmere Port with goals from Liam Walker, Dave Roberts, Anthony Ashton and Paul Fraser. The euphoria was short lived as fellow strugglers Blacon Youth Club snatched victory with a Warren Roberts’ penalty.

Inconsistent Marine Reserves had a fine 4-0 win in midweek at struggling Poulton Victoria with goals from Steve Williams, Mike Stuart and two from Paul Pearson.

But found themselves on a 3-2 reversal at the weekend when Ellesmere Port’s Nathan Mapletoft and Mathew Forshaw (2) earned maximum points. Paul Pearson and Steve Williams finding the net for fourth-placed Marine.

A stunning 10th-minute header by Lee Kissock for Newton set the home side on their way, and when Fred Stroud beat four defenders only to miss-kick his goal effort, Upton AA woke up and from a free-kick which left the Newton defence in a daze for Simon Andrews to equalise.

Newton were further rattled just before the break after Mick Downing failed to clear and Simon Andrews raced clear to make it 2-1.

Upton looked the more dangerous in the second period and went further ahead through Ilya Haycock. In the final minutes Lee Kissock got his second from the penalty spot.

Chris Nezianya and Stuart Wright gave Cammell Laird Reserves a two-goal lead before Dave Lewis and Richie Foulkes equalised before half-time for visitors Heswall.

Foulkes went on to complete his hat-trick in the second half.

Maghull, who finished runners-up last season, are finding victories hard to come by this season. Another draw on Saturday sees them in a relegation position, a goal from Gary Nuttall saving a point against visitors Ashville, who had Simon Donaghue on target.

A hat-trick from Phil Hudson for New Brighton at Poulton Victoria kept them in second place. Craig Nall and Andy Bolton replied for the Vics.

Leading the way are Runcorn Town, who narrowly won against visitors Castrol Social. A brace from Matty Jones cancelled out one from Mark Ryan of Castrol.

Christleton had found a bit of form and a brace from Tom Rowlands and one from Paul Hollyfield gave them a narrow victory at West Kirby, Bernie Holmes and Terry Cotgrave on target for the Deesiders.
