Linnets hit the road to Wembley

Sep 20 2007

by Dave Bettley, Runcorn Weekly News

THE Wembley trail begins for Runcorn Linnets this Saturday with first-time entry into the FA Vase.

Linnets host Vodkat League Division Two Daisy Hill in the second qualifying round at Witton Albion’s Wincham Park (ko 3pm), with a home tie against Salford City in the first round on Saturday, October 6 awaiting the winners.

Westhoughton-based Daisy Hill are third bottom of Division Two with just the one win from seven and were beaten 4-0 at home by Linnets in pre- season.

But they gave Linnets two tougher matches last season, twice losing by one goal.

And with Carragher’s men having lost the last couple at Wincham, complacency shouldn’t come into the equation.

There are fresh doubts over Paul Scott’s availability this weekend and vice-captain Colin Flood (knee ligaments) is out for ‘another week or so’.

Carragher must also check on Dave Standley (back) and Thomas Lamb (knee).

Linnets have signed Steve Malloy, who scored a spectacular pre-season goal at Skelmersdale but has since been unavailable through work commitments.

Another striker and a midfieldman could be on board by Saturday.

Barring a replay at Daisy Hill, Linnets will go to Warrington Town on Tuesday (7.45pm) in the Cheshire Senior Cup.
