WITH most clubs involved in National and County Cup Competitions New Brighton took their opportunity to take over the leadership of the Carlsberg First Division after Ian Loughran scored the only goal against visitors Upton AA. Marine Reserves moved in to fourth after a comprehensive victory at bottom club Vauxhall Motors Reserves. the home side limiting Marine to a single goal from Mike Stuart before the break, but couldn’t hold a rampant side in the second half as Mike Stuart netted his second followed by two from Steve Williams and one from Mark Gaffney. Maghull found the going tough at Ellesmere Port were Steve Scallion, Steve Chambers and Matty Forshaw wrapped up the points. Philip Kelly pulled one back for Maghull. Rowan Kelly and Colin McDonald helped Aintree Villa to the points at Christleton. Lennox Beddows found the net for the home side which leaves them next to bottom. A Simon Donaghue hat-trick and one from Francis Dickinson was not enough for Ashville in their FAVase Second Qualifying match at Oldham Town who found the net five times. A solitary goal for Blackpool Mechanics was also enough to dump Poulton Victoria out of the Competition. Poulton Vics Reserves hung on to top spot in Division two after demolishing Ashville Reserves with goals from Tommy Baker, Craig Diable, James Shaw and Anthony Daniels. A goal from John McDonald for Halton wasn’t enough as they came unstuck against visitors Capenhurst Villa, after a brace from Paul Fletcher. West Kirby Reserves showed some improvement after Mike Docherty, John Cauldwell and Adbe Buhalfaia found the net against visitors and fellow strugglers Fairfield Athletic who had Francis Burnett on target. Maghull Reserves closed the gap at the top after John Reynolds and Willy Morgan gave them a two-goal lead before Richard Buccanon pulled one back for visitors Christleton Reserves. In a five-goal thriller at Heswall Reserves the visitors New Brighton Reserves just edged it with two goals from Tommy Carroll and one from Steve James after Danny McNicholas and Peter Jones netted for the home side. After a fairly even first half at Mossley Hill Athletic which only produced one goal from Simon Ellis, they opened up in the second half with Simon Ellis adding another three to his tally along with goals from Wayne Miles, Mike Forshaw and Stuart Morland against visitors Ellesmere Port Reserves to preserve their six-point lead at the top of Division three. Trying to keep up with the leaders Runcorn Town Reserves hit top form and sent Capenhurst Villa Reserves home nursing an eight-goal thrashing after Kyle Marsid (2), Pete Murphy (2), David Jolly (2), Ged Bushell and Jay Cumpper all found the net. Manor Athletic were forced to work hard to take maximum points at Focus were Richie White netted the only goal of the game.
