NEWTON took all three points against Marine Reserves in the Carlsberg West Cheshire first division in bizarre circumstances at the weekend. Newton looked like forfeiting the points when substitute Mark Gaffney equalised in the 90th minute, however from the restart Steve Jones scored his second and winning goal when he struck a high ball from the halfway line towards the Marine goal. In what should have been a comfortable catch the goalkeeper, who had up until that point had an outstanding game, was blinded by the sun and the ball passed through his hands for Newton’s winner. Cammell Laird Reserves had a good week with a solitary second half goal from Adam Lea in the week to take the points at Poulton Victoria; they followed this with an easy 3-0 win against Blacon Youth Club with two goals from Robbie Stewart and one from Adam Lea. Heswall hit a purple patch in the week at Ashville netting five times through Mike Pickles, David Rudge, Chris Hesketh, Darren McGuinness and Richie Foulkes, Simon Donaghue getting Ashville’s consolation. A Tommy Morley hat-trick for Ashville at Aintree Villa eased their worries at the bottom, Anthony Johnson and Ray Nasser netting for the home side. Maghull recorded only their second win of the season and leapfrogged fellow strugglers Christleton with Darren Esdaille scoring the only goal of the game. Upton AA maintained their impressive start to the season after Mike Bowell and Olly Robinson kept them ahead of Vauxhall Motors Reserves who replied through Liam Walker. Leaders Runcorn Town turned their attentions to the Pyke Cup, with individual goals from Adam Carden, Ryan Wade, Will Dolan, Kyle Marsid and Aaron Brown they comfortably eased their way into the second round at the expense of champions West Kirby. Kirby replied through Bernie Holmes and Liam Atherton. In a truncated Division Two, high-riding Maghull Reserves were swept away at Helsby who had two hat-trick heroes in Nick Askey and Gary Cottiga. Maghull’s consolation came from Marko Parvas. Struggling Fairfield Athletic had Richard Campbell and Simon Meredith on target at Halton, but couldn’t stop the home team from going top of the division after two goals from John McDonald and one from Jamie O’Brien. Third division leaders who had dropped only one point to date against Richmond Raith Rovers found the going tough in the return meeting. Richmond had the better of the first half and what chances Mossley Hill created were wasted. Mossley Hill maintained their unbeaten record after two second-half goals from Kevin Franklin. Steven Jay pulled one back for Richmond. Runcorn Town Reserves with two goals from Peter Murphy and one from Danny Cummins stayed in touch with the leaders after a close encounter at fourth-placed Hale, who had Shaun Callard and Fassilli Poza on target. Fairfield Athletic Reserves, still without a win, were denied when Shaun Campbell equalised for St Werburghs after Joe Harnick put the home side in front.
