Chester Chronicle

CLEVER changes and determined defending gave the Motormen a deserved clean sheet on Monday after they haemorrhaged 17 goals in their last three games.

Motors' new back four were looking understandably nervous against the Burscough attack, having shipped five goals in Saturday's 5-2 home loss to Workington. But they got into their stride and threw in some last minute tackles to earn a welcome draw.

Man-of-the-match keeper Sean Lake kept the visitors in the game with two double saves, while some confident running at the other end could have nicked the game.

Joe McMahon, midfielder Carl Nesbitt and Keith Smith moved to the bench, while Lee Dames was out injured.

In came Chris Page at left back along with Jordan Holmes in central defence, with Lee Furlong returning from injury.

Vauxhall almost went ahead in the first minute when Steve Johnson had a cross met by Furlong, who fired a foot wide.

Burscough pushed forward early to capitalise on defensive nerves but backs-to-the-wall battling gave the Motormen time to settle.

Brian Moogan and Johnson both had chances before the former was booked for dissent. Lake then produced a double save from Kevin Ledbetter and Robbie Booth, repeating the effort in the six minutes of injury time in the second half as

Vauxhall hung on for the draw. But efforts from Johnson and Paul Taylor meant it was not all one way.

Motors now face Alfreton at home on Saturday and hope to gain momentum. Boss Carl Macauley previously identified fitness as a problem and could even strengthen the squad shortly.

* Paul Taylor and Mike Garrity were on target for Motors at Rivacre Park on Saturday but they could not prevent their side from slipping to a 5-2 home reverse.
