Macauley on mission to rebuild confidence

Aug 24 2007

Chester Chronicle

VAUXHALL Motors boss Carl Macauley admits that confidence at Rivacre Park has hit 'rock bottom' after his side shipped 12 goals in two matches.

The Blue Square North season may be only three games old, but the alarm bells are already ringing for Macauley in the wake of last Monday's 6-3 loss at Hyde United and Saturday's 6-0 hammering at Kettering Town.

Despite the two setbacks, the Vauxhall manager is determined to turn his team's fortunes around and is looking forward to this weekend's bank holiday double-header against Workington at home tomorrow and at Burscough on Monday (both 3pm).

He said: 'We can get results this weekend - definitely. But we need to work for it.'

Macauley is refusing to pull any punches and he described Saturday's six-goal demolition as 'a shambles'.

He added: 'You can't afford to give away six goals in a game and you certainly can't afford to give away five in the second half.

'Confidence is rock bottom and it is up to myself and my assistant Andy Mutch to lift the team.'

Motors began the season with a 2-0 home victory over Redditch but their form since then has dipped alar mingly.

Macauley has identified fitness as a key area of improvement for his players.

He said: 'The big problem we have to sort out is fitness. Kettering are a full-time outfit, in every day training. We are part time and only get four hours a week together before a match.

'It showed on Saturday and we need to fix it but there is only so much myself and Andy can do.

'We have told the lads when they are at home they need to keep themselves ticking over, go for a run to keep their fitness up.

'They are not little boys now, most have been at Liverpool, Everton or Tranmere and know how to keep fit.'

Macauley has two games in three days this weekend to straighten his side out.

Meanwhile, striker Thomas Rooney - who is facing a lengthy suspension after being sent-off during Motors' pre-season match against Tranmere - is heading for the Rivacre Park exit door.

An unnamed UniBond Premier League club has made an approach for the non-contract player.
