DABBERS boss Steve Davis believes his faith in his players has paid off. An opening-day defeat was followed by a demoralising 1-0 reverse in the derby at Alsager in midweek. But he refused to press the panic button and make drastic changes to his team. And he was rewarded with a 3-0 win at Sheffield on Saturday and a 3-1 home success over Gresley Rovers on Monday. Davis said: 'We wanted to start better, obviously, but I didn't put any pressure on the lads. You have to have faith and trust in each other. 'There were a lot of doubters at the club a few years ago, but I think we have managed to weed them all out. I feel I got the response I wanted because I showed faith in them. 'I felt we were unlucky at Alsager - their goal was miles offside - and I told them to build on that performance. They did that at Sheffield. 'And we played even better on Monday. We played our football, kept our shape and left them chasing the game. But there is no reason to get carried away, we must maintain these standards.' Dave Whittaker's 88th-minute effort stole maximum points for the Bullets on Wednesday, but goals just before half-time from Pavol Suhaj and Danny Griggs, along with Glyn Blackhurst's 85th-minute effort, sealed a super weekend win. A crowd for 526 turned up at the Weaver Stadium on Monday for the Division One South fixture, and they were not disappointed. After winning three consecutive corners Nantwich went on 17 minutes. Skipper Phil Parkinson played into the path of Blackhurst who fired across keeper Dave Clarke into the right hand corner of the net from 10 yards. And Blackhurst, who hit 11 goals for Alsager last season, was on the mark again on 38 minutes. He finished a close-range header following an accurate Griggs free-kick. With 12 minutes left Ashley Carter made sure the game was safe. Andy Kinsey teed the midfielder up and he lashed an unstoppable angled strike home. Gresley got one back in the 86th minute through former Crewe Alex professional Paul Edwards, but they were reduced to 10 men when Tom Groves received a second yellow card. Nantwich travel to Colne, of the North West Counties League, in the FA Cup preliminary round on Saturday, and Davis said: 'We want to do well in the FA Cup and we'll treat Colne with respect.' Nathan Southern's strike earned a 1-1 draw for Nantwich Town U17s against Curzon Ashton in the North West Youth Alliance. |
