FOR two nights only, Chester Gateway's last professional performance will give adults the chance to watch The Wizard of Oz in a child-free zone. The 1939 classic film starring Judy Garland has recently been released in cinemas nationwide - but here's your chance to watch the magical story brought to life on Chester Gateway's stage in an adult-only environment. Chester Gateway's stage production of The Wizard of Oz is just as memorable as the MGM film with all the classic songs: Over the Rainbow, Yellow Brick Road and We're Off To See The Wizard. The show incorporates different media, with an emphasis on video, projection and lighting, giving the production an abstract and magical feel. There is also a 1930s art deco theme, visible through the costumes and set. Jo Castleton, who appeared in The 101 Dalmatians and Cinderella is playing the Wicked Witch and Miss Almira Gulch. James Malcolm (The 101 Dalmatians) takes the roles of TinMan and Hickory. Andrew Price (The 101 Dalmatians and Merlin and Arthur) is Professor Chester Marvel and The Wizard. Paul Ryan (Merlin and Arthur) plays the Lion and Zeke, while Kieron Smith, who also performed in Merlin and Arthur, is performing the role of Scarecrow and Hunk. Director Richard Williams said: 'The Wizard of Oz is a favourite film of mine. 'It always reminds me of Christmas. 'In memory of the theatre, I have assembled familiar faces from the past shows I've done here at Chester Gateway.' Working alongside the actors are two stars in the making - leading ladies 13-year-old Danielle Rayner, from Hartford, and 12-year-old Bethany Staton, from Broughton, Chester, who share the role of Dorothy. Two sets of ten children aged eight to 12 from all over the North West play the roles of the Munchkins. Jasmine Hendry, Chester Gateway's chief executive, said: 'One special element of our Christmas show is that we have two talented local girls playing Dorothy and also 20 youngsters playing the Munchkins. 'Not only does this give them practical acting experience with a professional cast but the young people in the audience can relate to those roles much better.' Tickets for the adults- only performances of The Wizard of Oz on January 5 and January 12 are available from the Chester Gateway Box Office on 01244 340392 or www.chestergateway.co.uk. |
