Only oldies but still goldies

Mar 30 2005

By Ben Jervis, Crewe Chronicle

IF YOU were one of the teenyboppers giving The Look of Love to ABC or smooching to Spandau Ballet's True then you could be in for a great night of 80s nostalgia at the Victoria Hall in Stoke-on-Trent on Wednesday.

Heart-throb Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley and ABC's Martin Fry are touring together and promise a night of non-stop hits.

Classic power-songs like Gold are Hadley's trademark and while the man himself is a little older, he still has the ability to hold an audience, particularly the ladies, in the palm of his hand.

With the formation of Spandau Ballet in 1978, plus years of experience playing pubs and clubs for £25 and a pint of lager, Hadley and the band were sure their new synth-funk sound and the changing club scene meant a record deal was imminent. The dream came true when they signed to Chrysalis Records in 1980.

Despite ruling the 80s with Spandau and subsequent fall-outs over royalties in court, Hadley still feels he has more to offer. After all these years he still has the performing bug.

He says: 'Obviously I was famous with Spandau Ballet so I know what success tastes like. But first and foremost I love music.

'I love playing, performing, writing and recording in the studio. There seems to be a mind-set that thinks once you have supposedly had your time, you should then give it up and retire.

'But I think that if you love music and you're doing it for the right reasons, why should you? I love what I do.'

His desire to succeed led to him shining in ITV's Reborn in the USA.

Martin Fry and ABC offer a more up-tempo performance for the New Romantics who like a good dance. Poison Arrow is one classic that is sure to appear in the show, as is Tears Are Not Enough.
