My friend went for a homemade 8oz steak burger. There was plenty of substance to the meat, while herbs, spices, onion, lemon and tomato added to the flavour.

My garlic and lemon chicken burger was also good; proper chicken, nicely cooked, with a subtle added twang thanks to the garlic and lemon.

We were both struggling by the end - the burgers are really something to get your teeth around and certainly no light-bite snack.

The service was as decent as the food, and our waitress was friendly, attentive and professional throughout.

There were no long waits or glances at the watch, but neither was anything too hurried.

Well-fed, we returned to the bar area. It was just as well the food was good because the live band wasn't up to much that night. There was certainly no danger of us dancing on a full stomach.

Having been to Telford's many times before on a night out, this was the first time I had eaten. And, on this evidence, I certainly wouldn't rule out doing so again.

With its bar, dancefloor and food, Telford's offers the rare prospect of a one-stop night out, something akin to a hypermarket of Chester nightlife.

Check it out.

Location: Telford's Warehouse, Tower Wharf, Chester CH1 4EZ.

Tel: 01244 390090.

Cost: £45.30 for two people including drinks, starters and main courses.

Would suit: Youthfully minded people who don't mind a busy music-filled atmosphere.

Would not suit: Families with young children, couples wanting a quiet romantic meal.

Best Thing: Large portions, good food, atmospheric setting.

Worst Thing: A bit out of the way if you're not driving.
