NACHOS and fajitas are usually my number one choice when choosing from a Mexican menu, so I was determined to try something different on a recent visit to Dos Americas.
Undoubtedly one of the restaurant's biggest attractions is that it is among several Watergate Street restaurants with early evening menus, which means that if you wander past at 7pm on a weekday you will often see groups clamouring to get a table before the deal ends.
This made it an obvious choice for our pre-theatre dinner and when we arrived at 6pm we instantly qualified for the Beat The Clock menu, which runs from 6-7pm Monday to Friday.
With this set menu you choose two courses and pay 'the time you arrive', so we paid just £6, while someone arriving at 6.45pm would pay £6.45. Simple but effective.
As I was driving I immediately looked to see what non-alcoholic cocktails were on the drinks menu but to my disappointment there weren't any.
I double-checked with the waitress who suggested they could make one up for me if I chose what I wanted, but not knowing where to start I just decided to go for a cranberry juice.
Later on I overheard the lady next to me ask the same thing, with evening public transport not being Chester's biggest asset this suggested to me that a choice of non-alcoholic cocktails would be a big hit with the drivers among us if included on the drinks menu.
My non-driving colleague Rebecca's cocktail was an impressive house special called The Wave that combined frozen margarita 'swilled' with red sangria. With a tangy, refreshing taste it was the perfect accompaniment to the heavier tastes of the Tex-Mex food and a neat combination of Spain and Mexico's most famous alcoholic exports.
For our first course, we decided to share the fried potato skins with sour cream and salsa picante dips and the king prawns in filo with a chilli dipping sauce. We weren't kept waiting too long after we had ordered, but long enough to have a gossip - a key consideration for us girls.
