IT'S early morning in San Diego and the weather is perfect. We've had some terrible weather the past week - torrential rain - so it's not been a whole lot of fun. Since I was last in touch I finished 21st in a tournament at "The Auld Course" which was a little disappointing because I hit the ball well tee to green. I missed only four greens in regulation all week. I just did not hole enough putts. I finished three-under for the tournament, which put me 23rd in the money list. Then I had a week off when Lucy, my girlfriend, came out from England. We went to Disneyland, San Diego Zoo and to Las Vegas for a couple of days. We had a lot of fun and it felt good to take some time away from golf. Fellow professional Steve Ames taught me how important it is to take time out. He told me that he will play for three weeks and then takes a week off. During his week off, he will not even touch a golf club so when he comes back he will be fresh and ready to play. Last week, while I played solid tee to green, I once again found myself struggling on the greens. No matter how patient I stayed, I just could not make a putt which cost me, because I ended up just missing the cut. I went straight from that tournament to see my coach Dennis Sheehy and we got some really good work done. We both learnt a lot about my game and some of the things I do under pressure. They are so small that only a great coach like Den could pick up on them. Yesterday, I played a practice round at "Pala Mesa Resort" for my next tournament, which starts this week. It went okay but I was not at all impressed by the golf course. The greens were bumpy and the course was generally in poor condition. But it's the same for everybody I guess. I've been out here two months now and I have had a great time. The guys I live with are good company and the people I have played with have been nice too. I have four tournaments left before I come home and I hope to win one of them. It is just going to take one good putting week but I will stay patient, positive and keep working hard. |
