Stenson's major aim

Jan 16 2007

Liverpool Echo

RYDER CUP star Henrik Stenson has set his sights on becoming the first Swede to lift one of golf's 'major' titles and break Europe's long running drought.

The big-hitting 30-year-old, who played a major role in Europe's win over Asia in the Royal Trophy team event in Thailand yesterday, is seen as one of the continent's brightest hopes for success.

But with Tiger Woods on another major winning run and Phil Mickelson finally breaking his duck in the biggest events in the sport, Stenson is under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task.

"I can't say I should deliver a major but it would be nice to do it," he said. "I've played in them all and that's the first step. I've had reasonable results and now I'm focusing on being as good as I can be when we turn out for the majors.

"It would be nice to be the first Swede to win a major but Tiger, Phil, Jim Furyk and players likethat are all doing well.

"Tiger seems to nicktwo of them a year so that makes it harder."

Scotland's Paul Lawrie was the last European to win a major when he claimed The Open in 1999, the same year Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal clinched the Masters.

"My childhood dream was playing in the Ryder Cup and winning the Open, and one of those has come true," added Stenson. "But, after playing in the US Open, I think it suits my game better.
