Trying to read a putt, what are the factors to take into consideration?
I Plumbley, Maghull
ONLY through experiences will you learn the art of reading the contours of a green correct-ly. It is not something that can be taught.
I would stress that the most important thing to focus on when putting is the pace. You can be the best in the world at reading the line but if the pace is not right it will miss every time.
The harder you strike the ball the less it will take the borrow. Hit it too softly and it falls away miserably.
The ideal pace is that which would send the ball about 18 inches past the hole. That will give the ball a good chance of holding its line and if you miss you will at least see the line for your next putt.
Leave your putts short and you are none the wiser.
