Floating pageant for festival

May 7 2008

A UNIQUE floating floral pageant sets sail from Audlem next month as part of Cheshire’s Year of Gardens festival.

Decorated canal boats will depart from the four main compass points of the county, including Audlem, and converge on Middlewich for the Folk & Boat Festival, which starts on Friday, June 13.

The Shroppie Fly pub boat Saturn will travel from the village on Sunday, June 8, along the Trent & Mersey Canal, linking up with a heritage vessel called Shad at Barbridge.

Along with Prince William and Lindsay, the four boats will negotiate a staggering 324 bridges, tunnels and aqueducts along the two waterways before congregating at the festival.

The flotilla will form a floating garden, decorated with flowers and plants, bringing a vivid aquatic dimension to ‘Year of the Garden’.

Societies are set to support the floating parade while private vessels are encouraged to participate, highlighting the sense of community among those who cruise and live along the waterways of Cheshire.

Wales & Border Counties business development manager Susan Lewis said the event embodied the unique vitality generated by waterways.
