CHESHIRE Year of the Gardens is set to kick start next week with Neston Civic Society’s meeting entitled “An Overview of Kew Gardens".
Paul Cooke, curator of Ness Gardens, will address the meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at 8pm at which visitors and new members are welcome.
The society’s last meeting was addressed by the director of Ness Gardens, Kevin Reid, who highlighted the outstanding collections at Ness of rowan, birch and willow.
He paid tribute to the far-sighted work of Mr Bulley, who sent plant collectors to China, and also praised Ken Hulme who, as director from 1957 to 1987, oversaw a major expansion of the gardens.
Ness Gardens, he said, had recovered well from the loss of 57 trees in the storm of January 2007 and Mr Reid was working hard to encourage visitors to come by public transport.
