Crewe Station will look blooming marvellous!

Feb 6 2008

by Dave Fox, Crewe Chronicle

PASSENGERS at Crewe Station will be stopped in their tracks this summer by a garden blooming on Platform Five!

The ambitious 48 square metre garden is being designed to catch the eye of many of the tens of thousands of passengers who are expected to travel by train to the Liverpool Capital of Culture celebrations.

The initiative aims to underline the railway station’s major role in promoting Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08, one of the biggest initiatives ever launched by Visit Chester & Cheshire to boost Cheshire’s visitor economy.

A group of students from Reaseheath College at Nantwich accepted the challenge to come up with innovative designs for the project.

The winning proposal from Debbie Dexter was selected by representatives from local tourism board Visit Chester & Cheshire, Virgin Trains, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, Reaseheath College and landscape contractor W A P Lawton & Son Ltd.

Reaseheath head of horticulture and judge, Ian Benison, said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for our garden design students to leave their mark. Judging has been very difficult since the quality of all the designs has been exceptional.”

The garden will be constructed next month with plants provided by Bridgemere Garden World. The feature will complement Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08 signs already in place.

Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 08 features a wide variety of events and attractions.

Paul Ancell, chief executive of Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, commented: “It is important that Cheshire’s Year of Gardens message is directed at people arriving at and passing through Crewe Railway Station, whether visitors or commuters.”

Crewe Station manager Sam Dixon added: “As a key transport provider we are very pleased to be involved in such a worthwhile project that promotes tourism in the area. Thousands of our customers who use Crewe Station will I am sure enjoy the award winning garden design.”
