Young gardeners weave their way to success

Jan 23 2008

by Dave Goodban, Mid Cheshire Chronicle

PUPILS of Kingsmead Primary School have been learning how to weave willow branches to make a living shelter for their new outdoor play area.

The garden is being built with help from Groundwork Cheshire, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) and funding from Vale Royal Borough Council and Cheshire Year of the Gardens.

“The garden has been designed to provide shade, shelter and privacy and to give the children opportunities for imaginative and exploratory play,” said teacher Rosie Hoyle.

The garden already features a living willow fence or ‘fedge’ for privacy and a willow archway and tepee, is expected to be finished by the end of February 2008.

It has been built with the combined efforts of parents, volunteers from the community, pupils and staff.
